1 WEEK LATER
The entire terminal buzzed with energy. Students dragged suitcases, clicking selfies, laughing, and waving at each other as the university’s international trip group gathered near the check-in counters.
Meera Ma’am clapped her hands to get attention,
“Alright, everyone! Please settle down. I know you all are excited, but let’s keep some discipline, okay? We have to check in for New York flight.”
Vanshika, holding her passport in one hand and coffee in the other, said,
“Ma’am, everyone’s here except Raghav… as usual.”
Ishana sighed, “He’ll probably enter like a hero again, making everyone wait.”
Vihaan chuckled, “Knowing him, he’s probably taking his time choosing sunglasses.”
And right then, a familiar voice came from behind—
“Excuse me, I don’t take time choosing sunglasses, I take time looking this good,” Raghav said, walking in with that trademark smirk, suitcase in hand.
Vanshika crossed her arms, “Late again, Mr. Superstar.”
Raghav shrugged casually, “Traffic jam, Miss Angry Bird. You should thank me I even made it before boarding.”
Abhiman, adjusting his bag strap, commented dryly, “Or maybe we should thank the airline for the delay.”
The group laughed while Meera Ma’am gave them a look, half stern, half fond. “Raghav, you’ll never change.”
“Never intend to, ma’am,” he said playfully.
Second teacher, Rajesh Sir, came forward with the list in hand.
“Alright everyone, check your passports and boarding passes. We don’t want anyone left behind.”
Navya muttered, “Except maybe Vihaan.”
Vihaan, pretending to be offended, said, “Wow Navya, mere bina trip boring hota, par tum toh mujhe hi chhodne ke mood mein ho!”
Navya rolled her eyes, “Trip boring nahi peaceful hoga.”
Ishana, laughing, said, “You two will never stop fighting, will you?”
Vanshika added, “Neither will Raghav and his late entries.”
Raghav smirked, leaning slightly closer to her, “Tumhe toh sirf mujhe taunt maarne ka reason chahiye.”
Vanshika shot back, “Kyunki reason hamesha mil hi jaata hai.”
Ishana, holding her coffee, looked at the flight board. “Gate number 16… that’s us. Let’s go before Vanshi and Raghav start World War III.”
Abhiman, walking beside her, whispered with a smirk, “And before Vihaan starts singing in the airport again.”
Vihaan gasped dramatically. “Excuse me! My singing brings peace to chaos.”
Raghav laughed, “More like pain to ears.”
Vanshika shook her head, smiling. “You guys are crazy.”
As they reached the security check, Raghav leaned close to Vanshika and whispered teasingly,“By the way, you look gorgeous today.”
Vanshika froze for a second, her heartbeat skipping before she replied with mock irritation,“Tumhe mai humesha acchi lagti hu Raghav, don’t flatter me.”
He grinned. “Ab kya hi kare.”
Before Vanshika could reply, Ishana shouted from ahead, “Oye lovebirds! Boarding kar rahe hain ya airport mein hi shaadi racha loge?”
Everyone laughed again as Vanshika blushed, muttering under her breath, “Pagal ladki.”
Vihaan added, “Arre abhi toh trip start hua hai, picture abhi baaki hai mere dost.”
Abhiman smirked knowingly, “Exactly. And I have a feeling this trip… is going to change a lot of things.”
Rajesh Sir interrupted, “Alright kids, enough banter. Let’s head to security check before we miss the flight. Keep your passports ready.”
They all moved together, still laughing and teasing along the way.
The flight had taken off. The cabin lights were dimmed, passengers were settling down, and a soft hum of the engines filled the air.Raghav sat beside Vanshika, who was silently looking out the window. Her fingers fidgeted with the bracelet on her wrist, her face calm but her eyes distant — lost somewhere far away from the clouds outside.
He noticed it immediately.
“Tum itni chup kyun ho?” he asked softly, leaning a bit closer. “Usually tumhara volume toh plane ke engine se bhi zyada hota hai.”
She gave a small, forced smile.
“Bas... thoda thak gayi hoon.”
“Vanshika…” Raghav said quietly. The teasing tone disappeared.
“You’re not just tired. You’re... off.”
Her throat tightened slightly. She didn’t want to talk, not again, not about that night. But Raghav’s voice had a way of breaking through her walls.
She sighed, turning her head toward him.
“I thought... maybe this trip would help. You know, thoda stress kam ho jaaye. But every time I close my eyes, that thing flashes again —that message and all. Do hafte ho gaye Raghav, aur ab tak kuch nahi mila. It’s like he vanished.”
Raghav’s jaw clenched, anger flickering in his eyes.
“I swear, jab milega na, main—”
“Raghav…” she cut him off gently, placing her hand on his arm. “I’m already fighting this... I don’t want you to burn with me.”
He looked at her hand resting on his sleeve, then at her eyes — tired, brave, and full of pain she tried to hide from the world. He covered her hand with his, his voice low and steady.
“You don’t have to fight alone, Vani. Not anymore. Main hoon na.”
Her eyes shimmered.
“Pata nahi ye sab kyu hota reheta hai. I'm just fed up.”
“Phir bhi tum yahan ho,” he said softly. “You showed up. You’re still trying. That’s what makes you stronger than anyone else I know.”
For a long moment, she didn’t reply. The sound of the aircraft filled the silence as she looked at him — the way his eyes held nothing but care, no pity, no judgment, just quiet strength.
“Tum hamesha sahi baatein kaise bol lete ho?” she asked finally, her voice breaking into a faint smile.
Raghav smiled back. “Kyunki jab baat tumhari hoti hai, galat bolne ka option hi nahi hota.”
Her heart skipped. She looked down, trying to hide her blush, pretending to fix her seatbelt. “Tumhe har baat me flirting karni hi hoti hai na?”
He chuckled softly. “Agar tum muskura do, toh haan… karni padti hai.”
For the first time in days, Vanshika laughed genuinely, the sound soft and warm, like something inside her finally loosened.
Raghav leaned back, his eyes still on her.
“Dekha… trip sahi direction me jaa raha hai.”
She shook her head with a small smile.
“Tum impossible ho.”
“And you,” he said quietly, “are worth it.”
Their eyes met — steady, unspoken, and deep — as the world outside turned silver under the moonlight. For the rest of the flight, they didn’t talk much; they didn’t need to. His hand stayed close enough for her to feel safe, and for the first time in a long while, Vanshika rested her head against the seat and drifted into peaceful sleep.
Raghav looked at her sleeping face, a faint smile tugging his lips.Under his breath, he whispered,
“Sleep well, Vinnie… whatever broke you, I’ll fix it.”
Raghav reached for his headset and slipped it on, letting soft music fill his ears. The gentle hum of the plane mingled with the rhythm, creating a peaceful cocoon around them.
Vanshika, finally letting herself relax after the stressful week, had drifted into a deep slumber. In her sleep, she unconsciously leaned closer and rested her head against Raghav’s shoulder.
He noticed immediately, a soft smile tugging at his lips. She looked so serene, so untouched by the chaos of the past few days, and he felt a strange, protective warmth bloom in his chest.
Carefully, so as not to disturb her, he intertwined his fingers with hers, gently stroking the back of her hand. The warmth of her skin against his sent a comforting, quiet reassurance through him.
Slowly, she shifted in her sleep, moving closer until her hair brushed the crook of his neck. Her soft, even breaths tickled his skin. Raghav felt a flutter in his chest, a quiet intensity he hadn’t expected, but he didn’t move away. He simply held her, letting her find comfort in him.
Leaning down, he placed a soft, tender kiss on her forehead, pressing gently as if to silently promise her safety.
“You’re safe, Vani,” he whispered under his breath, his voice low enough that only the hum of the plane could hear him. “Nothing will touch you… not while I’m here.”
She shifted slightly again in her sleep, unconsciously curling closer, and he let himself savor the quiet intimacy of the moment. For once, words weren’t necessary. The simple closeness, the unspoken trust, and the soft rhythm of their hearts were enough.
Raghav leaned back slightly, careful not to disturb her, and let the music play on, feeling a calm he hadn’t realized he needed.
Meanwhile, a few rows behind, Ishana sat beside Abhiman, both of them buried in their laptops and phones. Ishana was furiously scrolling through messages, checking reports and news, her brows furrowed in frustration.
“Abhi yaar… I don’t get it,” she muttered, tossing her phone lightly onto the tray table.
“We’ve been trying for a week, every lead, every name, every angle… and still nothing. It’s like he vanished.”
Abhiman leaned back in his seat, his arms crossed but his gaze softening as he looked at her.
“I know, Ishu… I know it’s frustrating. But you’re doing everything you can. That’s what matters.”
She let out a shaky sigh, biting her lip. “It’s just… Vanshika. She’s been carrying this on her own, and I… I just hate seeing her like this. Angry, worried, tense… it’s eating her up.”
Abhiman reached out, resting a hand lightly over hers. “Hey, she’s strong. Stronger than we give her credit for. But she’s not invincible. That’s why we’re here. Ishana, she’s not alone anymore. You, me… we’ve got her back.”
Ishana looked at him, eyes reflecting both gratitude and the weight of their shared worry.
“I know. It’s just… I feel so helpless sometimes. Like no matter what we do, it’s never enough.”
Abhiman squeezed her hand gently. “It is enough. Every little thing we do, every step we take… it counts. Vanshika will find her peace eventually. And until then, we’re here to make sure she doesn’t have to face this alone.”
Ishana exhaled slowly, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. “Thanks, Abhi… you always know what to say.”
He gave a small, reassuring smile. “That’s what I’m here for. Now, enough stress for today. Let’s at least try to relax during this flight. For her, and for ourselves.”
Ishana nodded, leaning back in her seat, and for a brief moment, she allowed herself to breathe. The soft hum of the airplane engines and the faint music from Raghav’s headset floated around them, creating a quiet bubble of calm amidst the chaos of thoughts and worry.
They shared a small, understanding glance — unspoken but meaningful. Both of them silently promised to keep protecting her, to keep watching over Vanshika, until she could finally rest and heal.
Vanshika stirred in her sleep, blinking her eyes open as she tried to get comfortable. Before she could adjust, she realized a weight had settled on her shoulder. Her gaze drifted sideways and her lips curved into a soft smile — Raghav was sleeping peacefully beside her, headphones still on, completely lost in his own world.
She quietly removed his headset and placed it on the tray table, careful not to wake him. The soft rhythm of his breathing was oddly comforting. As she settled back, she felt him move slightly, resting against the crook of her neck. A shiver ran down her spine at the subtle closeness, and her heart skipped a beat.
Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, careful and gentle, and let her fingers run through his hair. His strands were soft beneath her touch, and the warmth radiating from him made her feel both safe and strangely fluttery.
Even in sleep, Raghav seemed aware of her presence, tilting slightly to rest more comfortably against her. Vanshika allowed herself a few moments like this — the hum of the plane in the background, the dim lights above, and the gentle intimacy between them.
For once, she didn’t think about the past week, about the chaos, or about the guy she had been chasing. For now, all that mattered was this quiet closeness, the soft steady warmth of Raghav by her side, and the sense that, at least in this small bubble, she could finally breathe.
Her fingers stroked his hair softly, and a faint smile lingered on her lips, as if silently promising him — and herself — that she wasn’t alone anymore.
The soft hum of the plane and the dim glow of the cabin were the only sounds as Vanshika continued gently stroking Raghav’s hair. Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, blinking against the soft light. For a brief moment, he seemed confused, then his gaze softened as he realized Vanshika’s arms were around him.
“Good morning… or should I say… good sleep?” she whispered softly, a faint teasing tone in her voice.
Raghav smirked, stretching slightly, though he didn’t pull away. “Morning, Vani… looks like I got the better part of the nap,” he murmured, his voice low and husky from sleep.
She chuckled quietly, though her heart skipped a beat at her nickname, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead.
“Better? You were the one snoring softly on my shoulder.”
“Was I?” he teased, but his eyes twinkled as he looked at her. “I might have been… but I didn’t mind it.”
Vanshika felt a small flutter in her chest. “You didn’t?” she asked, tilting her head slightly, letting the faint blush rise on her cheeks.
He reached out, brushing his fingers gently along her arm. “No. In fact… it was kind of nice. Feels… comforting.”
She looked down shyly, feeling the warmth of his hand and the closeness of his presence.
“Comforting, huh? I guess I did all the work then,” she said softly, though there was a playful sparkle in her eyes.
Raghav leaned slightly closer, his forehead almost brushing hers. “All the work… or just the part that matters most?” His voice was quiet, teasing, yet somehow tender.
Vanshika’s lips parted slightly, and she laughed softly, shaking her head. “You’re impossible, you know that?”
“Maybe,” he said, a faint smile tugging at his lips, “but you… somehow make it impossible to care.”
They shared a quiet, lingering glance, the airplane cabin around them fading into a soft bubble where only the two of them existed.
Finally, Vanshika broke the silence, smiling gently.
“Let’s… get ready soon. We’re landing in New York before we know it.”
Raghav nodded, though he didn’t release her hand. “Yeah… but right now… I’m not in a hurry.”
Her eyes met his again, soft and unspoken words passing between them — a quiet promise of trust, comfort, and the beginnings of something deeper. For the first time in a long while, Vanshika felt a real sense of calm, a feeling that whatever chaos awaited her, she wouldn’t have to face it alone.
The plane wheels touched the runway with a soft thud, and the passengers stirred in excitement. Vanshika, still holding Raghav’s hand lightly, stretched and yawned, a small smile playing on her lips. The gentle tension from the flight seemed to have eased, replaced with the thrill of a new adventure.
“I can’t believe we’re finally in New York!” Ishana exclaimed, practically bouncing in her seat. Abhiman chuckled beside her, shaking his head.
“Don’t forget your luggage first, Ishu,” he teased. “You’ll be too busy shopping if we let you loose immediately.”
“Huu!! Aesa kuch nahi hoga!!” Ishana shot back playfully, nudging him.
The group filed off the plane in a cheerful, chaotic stream. Vanshika and Raghav walked together, side by side, while Ishana and Abhiman, and Vihaan and Navya formed their own little pairs, laughing and chattering.
“Alright, everyone, let’s keep together,” called out Professor Sharma, one of the teachers supervising the trip.
“Remember, we’re here to explore, learn, and enjoy, but also follow rules — especially at the airport.”
“Yes, ma’am!” the students chorused, though the excitement made them slightly hyper.
“Ishana, make sure you stick with your group,” another teacher reminded gently, noticing her glancing at the shops and displays.
“Of course, ma’am,” Ishana replied politely, squeezing Abhiman’s hand subtly as a silent promise to stick together.
As they moved through the bustling airport, the group’s energy was contagious. Raghav helped Vanshika with her rolling suitcase, while Vihaan held a map, checking directions. Navya pointed out cafés and shops, already planning their first stop.
“Are we allowed to go there first?” she asked eagerly, nodding toward a bakery display.
“Focus, Navya,” Raghav said with a mock frown, but his eyes twinkled as he glanced at Vanshika. “We’ll celebrate in style once we’re settled.”
“Raghav, don’t be such a buzzkill,” Vanshika teased, nudging him lightly.
“Someone has to be responsible,” he replied, his hand brushing against hers as they walked, the contact lingering just a fraction longer than necessary.
Meanwhile, Abhiman whispered to Ishana, “Ready for some sightseeing chaos?”
She grinned, leaning slightly closer. “As long as you don’t lose me in the crowd, I’m ready for anything.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” he murmured, his tone soft but full of meaning.
The teachers guided them to the luggage area, reminding them, “Check all your belongings! And remember, stay together in the group. New York is exciting, but safety comes first.”
The students groaned dramatically, but Vanshika rolled her eyes playfully. “Yes, ma’am, we promise not to cause trouble… too much.”
“Good answer,” the teacher said, smiling.
Once they collected their luggage, the group began heading toward the buses. Vanshika glanced at Raghav, who kept a protective hand hovering near hers. The subtle warmth of his presence made her heart flutter, and she found herself squeezing his hand lightly in response.
Ishana and Abhiman walked a step behind them, laughing quietly at Navya and Vihaan, who were bickering over directions to the bus.
“Navya, you’re reading it upside down!” Vihaan said, holding the map closer.
“I am not! You’re blind!” she shot back, both of them laughing as they finally got the directions right.
Even in the chaos of the airport, Vanshika felt a strange sense of peace — the comfort of friends, the quiet understanding of Raghav beside her, and the sense that, for this week at least, she could finally breathe.
The bus pulled up in front of the hotel, the lights of New York sparkling through the large glass entrance. Vanshika pressed her nose against the window, eyes wide.
“Wow… this place is amazing!” Ishana exclaimed, practically bouncing as Abhiman carried some of her bags.
“Focus, Ishu,” Abhiman teased with a soft grin. “Let’s get checked in first before you start exploring every corner.”
Vanshika walked beside Raghav, her bag slung over her shoulder. She stole a glance at him, feeling a small flutter as he offered her hand to steady her on the steps.
The hotel manager greeted them warmly. “Welcome! Your rooms are ready. The boys will be in Room 1203, and the girls in Room 1204.”
Raghav glanced at Vanshika. “Looks like we’ll have some privacy tonight,” he said, voice calm but carrying warmth.
Vanshika smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Yes… a little peace and quiet will be nice,” she replied softly, her heart skipping a beat.
Vihaan nudged Navya as they collected their keys. “I hope the girls’ room is as big as ours. You know, for all your shopping bags,” he teased.
“Very funny,” Navya shot back, rolling her eyes. “Don’t be jealous, Vihaan. We’ll manage.”
Abhiman helped Ishana with her suitcase into the girls’ elevator. “Be careful with that,” he murmured.
“I know,” she replied, smiling at him. “Thanks, Abhiman.”
The boys entered Room 1203. Raghav set his bag down, looking at the space.
“All settled. Window bed is mine,” he said lightly.
Vihaan grinned. “Fine, I’ll take the bed next to the window. Better view.”
Abhiman chuckled. “As long as no one fights over it, we’re good.”
The girls reached Room 1204. Vanshika and Ishana flopped onto the beds, while Navya went straight to the window.
“This view…” Vanshika murmured, pressing her hand against the glass, the city lights reflecting in her eyes.
“I know, right?” Ishana grinned. “This trip is already perfect. Can’t wait for tomorrow.”
Navya plopped onto the bed dramatically.
Vanshika laughed softly. "I'll take the one next to you, Navya. We can plan tomorrow's sightseeing together."
After unpacking just enough, Vanshika leaned back on her bed, glancing at Ishana and Navya.
"It feels nice... being here with everyone. For once, I can just relax."
Ishana nodded. "Exactly. No stress, no chasing leads for now. Just fun and friends."
Vanshika smiled softly, thinking of Raghav and the quiet comfort he'd given her on the plane. She glanced toward the door where she knew the boys' room was.
"I wonder what those three are up to," she murmured, a hint of mischief in her voice.
Navya giggled. "Knowing them? Probably plotting something already."
The stage was set - New York, two hotel rooms, six friends, a week of adventures ahead, and subtle sparks of romance and tension quietly weaving between them.
The dining hall of the hotel was warm and lively, soft music filling the air as the students chatted and laughed. The youngsters sat together at one table-plates cleared, glasses half-empty-just enjoying the moment.Raghav was in the middle of teasing Vihaan about his terrible American accent, while Navya kept correcting him. Ishana was laughing at something Abhiman said, her eyes shining.Vanshika smiled faintly at their chatter, but her mind was somewhere far away.A flash.A blurry face.A hand mixing something into her drink. Her heart tightened. She pushed her chair slightly and stood up.
"I'm going to rest," she said quietly.
Ishana looked up immediately, concern crossing her face."Arre, kyun? Stay na, let's enjoy a little more. It's our first night here."
Vanshika shook her head without meeting anyone's eyes."No... I'm just tired."
Before anyone could say another word, she turned around and walked out of the hall. Her steps were quick, almost hurried, as if she was running from a memory only she could see.Raghav's smile faded the moment he noticed the stiffness in her shoulders, the way her fingers trembled slightly as she held her dupatta. His eyes followed her long after she disappeared from the hall.A strange heaviness settled on the table.Ishana sighed softly.
"She's still thinking about everything... she hasn't really rested in weeks."Navya nodded sadly.
Vihaan's jaw tightened. "I hate seeing her like that."
Abhiman leaned back in his chair, serious for once. "I'll talk to her later. Or maybe... Raghav, you should."
Raghav didn't respond at first. He just stared at the empty doorway, his heart thudding with concern he couldn't hide. Finally, he whispered, "Yeah... I'll go check on her."
Raghav quietly entered Vanshika's room and closed the door behind him.Vanshika didn't even look at him-she simply walked straight toward the balcony, her steps slow, heavy. She pushed the curtain aside and stepped out into the cool night breeze. She closed her eyes again... just like she had before he arrived. Her fingers gripped the railing, knuckles turning white.Raghav walked out and stood beside her.Close enough to be a comfort, far enough to not push her.For a long moment, neither spoke. The city lights of New York glittered beneath them. The wind brushed past. The silence wasn't awkward-it was heavy... filled with emotions both of them understood too well.
Finally, Vanshika whispered, her voice raw but steady:
"Tum mera peecha kabhi nahi chhodge na?"
Raghav's lips curved into a soft chuckle. He turned slightly toward her.
"Never."
Vanshika opened her eyes and looked at him.A small smile tugged at her lips. A chuckle escaped hers too-quiet, but real.Raghav took one small step closer. Then another. He slowly reached for her hand, giving her every chance to pull away. She didn't.Their fingers intertwined naturally, like they belonged together.Raghav studied her face-the softness in her eyes, the tiredness she tried to hide, the vulnerability she only showed him.
"Better?" he asked in a low murmur.
She breathed out, almost a silent yes.Just the-
RING. RING.
Her phone vibrated inside the room.Vanshika frowned, irritated and confused.
"Kaun call kar raha hai iss waqt..."She slipped her hand from his and went inside, picking up her phone from the nightstand. The screen lit up.Zubair.Her eyes narrowed immediately. She swallowed, a sudden uneasiness creeping in.Raghav remained at the balcony doorway, watching her face change.Vanshika answered the call.
"Hello...?"
Vanshika picked up the call, still frowning." Haan, Zubair? Kya hua?" she asked, her voice steady but her heartbeat slightly uneven.
On the other side, Zubair sounded tired... frustrated even."Vanshi... hum log uss bande ke peeche kaafi time se lage hue hain. Bohot saare leads follow kiye, but..." he exhaled sharply, "sab dead-end nikle."
Raghav, who had followed her inside, quietly leaned on the balcony doorframe, watching her.
"Kuch mila hi nahi?" she asked softly.
Zubair continued, "Thoda bohot information mila hai... bas itna ki wo banda iss city ka nahi hai. Kafi saal pehle shift hua tha. Par naam, address, concrete details-kuch solid nahi mil raha."He paused.
"It's like he vanished after that incident."Vanshika's grip on the phone tightened. For a moment, she didn't respond.
"Vanshi... I know you're expecting more. But sach kahu toh... ye information abhi ke liye useless hi hai. Hum wapas try kar rahe, but I don't want to promise anything fake."
"Hmm... theek hai," she whispered. There was a silence.
"Tu theek hai?" Zubair asked gently. She closed her eyes, trying to steady her breath.
"Haan... main thik hoon. Tum log bas safe rehna."
"Always."The call ended.
Vanshika didn't say anything after the call ended. She just stood there, eyes closed, her breath uneven as she tried to calm the storm building inside her chest.Raghav waited quietly, giving her the space she needed... but never moving away. After a long moment, her voice came out like a fragile whisper-so soft that he almost missed it.
"Can I... hug you?"She didn't open her eyes when she said it.
But Raghav didn't need a single second to think.Without a word, he stepped forward and pulled her into him-firm, protective, grounding. As if he had been waiting... needing this closeness as much as she did.Vanshika instantly wrapped her arms around him, clutching his shirt in both fists as she hugged him tightly. Her forehead rested on his chest, right where his heartbeat was the loudest. And god... that heartbeat.Steady. Strong. Reassuring. It echoed in her ears like a promise.
Raghav lowered his head, his chin lightly touching the top of her head, his arms circling her completely-one hand on her back, the other on her waist, holding her as if shielding her from every worry.Neither spoke. They didn't need to.Her breath slowly steadied in sync with his heart. And for the first time that night, she didn't feel overwhelmed. She just felt... safe.
Raghav tightened his arms around her just a little more, his chin resting on her hair as he breathed her in.He didn't realise it at first... but his own heartbeat had picked up.Fast.Too fast. And Vanshika heard it.Her ear was pressed against his chest, right above his heart-each thud loud, hurried, uneven... nothing like the calm and composed Raghav everyone knew.
For a second, she froze. Not out of fear-but out of the sudden realisation...He was nervous. He was affected. He cared.Maybe more than he ever said. Her fingers unconsciously curled tighter around the fabric of his shirt.
Inside Raghav, everything was chaos. He didn't know what shocked him more-that she had asked to hug him...Or that holding her felt like something his heart had been waiting for.He could feel her warmth sinking into him, melting every wall he had built around himself. Her breath against his chest sent a shiver down his spine, and he swallowed hard, hoping she wouldn't notice. But she did.She felt everything. And that made something stir inside her-something she wasn't ready to name out loud yet.
Raghav slowly moved a hand up her back, his palm warm, steady... drawing slow, soothing circles. Not to calm her.To calm himself too.Vanshika closed her eyes tighter as she whispered, barely audible,
"Your heart is... beating really fast."
Raghav smiled softly against her hair, not loosening the hug.
"Maybe," he murmured, voice low and slightly shaky, "it happens when someone I care about this much gets hurt."
Her breath caught.He didn't say more.She didn't reply.But the silence between them wasn't empty-it was full.Of unsaid things.Unrealised feelings.And a closeness neither wanted to break.
After a long moment in his arms, Vanshika slowly loosened her hold.Raghav hesitated-just for a second-before he let her pull away. But neither stepped back completely. They were still close.Close enough to feel each other's breath.Vanshika lifted her head, her eyes meeting his... and the world around them just faded out.The lights, the city noise, the stress-everything vanished.Only he was there.Only she was there.Raghav raised his hand and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.His fingers brushed her cheek, warm and careful, as if she would break if he touched too firmly. She swallowed. He could see the exhaustion in her eyes...but he could also see the trust.Trust she didn't give easily.Trust she didn't give to anyone except .
"Vansh" her name like it meant something more than just four letters. Her eyes fluttered shut at the sound of it.Raghav's thumb grazed her cheekbone gently.
"Tum akeli nahi ho," he murmured.
"No matter what happened... or what will happen... I'm here. Always."A soft tremble ran through her, but she didn't step back.Instead, she whispered, barely audible,
"I know."Silence again. But this time it wasn't heavy-it was warm, delicate, beautiful.Vanshika's fingers lightly brushed his wrist, almost hesitant, almost shy...as if her heart was moving faster than her mind.Raghav felt it.Every tiny movement.Every unspoken emotion. And for the first time in a long time...he didn't try to hide how much she affected him.
"Come," he finally whispered, his forehead still resting against hers, "let's sit. You need rest."
She nodded faintly, but neither moved.Because pulling away felt harder than staying this close.
Raghav finally guided her to sit by the balcony door, where the cold breeze softened the heaviness in the air.He placed his jacket around her shoulders without asking. She didn't refuse. She simply pulled it tighter around herself, breathing in the faint scent of him that somehow calmed her more than anything else had in days.Raghav sat beside her, knees slightly touching.
"Better?" he asked softly. She hummed in response. But he could still sense the lingering tension in her shoulders. So he nudged her lightly with his elbow.
"Should I start distracting you," he said, "ya tum khud bataogi what usually works?"
Vanshika let out a small exhale, eyes still distant."Try karlo... dekhte hain," she whispered.
Raghav pretended to think seriously."Hmm, distraction... distraction... Oh! Ishana ke fresher's party ke rehersal wale dance steps yaad hai? The ones where she looks like she's fighting invisible mosquitoes?"
A tiny, tiny smile appeared on her lips.Raghav internally celebrated it like a victory. He continued, more animated this time,
"Aur Vihaan ka flirting level toh-bas him looking at a girl and saying 'Hi', and poori duniya samajhti hai ki woh proposal de diya."
Vanshika chuckled-actually chuckled. The first real sound of ease since she took that call.
Raghav's eyes softened instantly."See?" he teased. "Itna mushkil bhi nahi tha."
She turned toward him, this time meeting his eyes without hesitation.
"You're crazy," she whispered.
"And you're finally smiling," he replied gently. The tension in her chest dropped another level. And without realizing, she shifted a little closer to him.Raghav noticed it.He didn't comment... but his heart softened more than he wanted to admit. Then, out of nowhere, Vanshika whispered,
"You know... when I was small, I used to run behind ice-cream wale bhaiya with a 5 rupee coin in my hand... only to realize later that the coin was actually a token from my mom's purse."
Raghav blinked. That was... unexpected. But it made him laugh softly, "Matlab tum choti se hi criminal tendencies rakhti ho?"
She laughed-fully, genuinely this time.Head tilted back.Eyes half closed.Stress almost gone.
Encouraged, she continued, "Aur... main har dusre din tree pe chadh jaati thi... just to prove to Ishana that I'm braver than her."
Raghav raised an eyebrow."Did you fall?"
"Three times," she said proudly.
He burst out laughing."Tum bilkul pagal thi."
"Still am," she grinned. And just like that-without trying, without effort-she forgot her stress, forgot the call, forgot the fear. She kept talking about her childhood, her stupid fights with Ishana, how she broke her bicycle twice, how she forced Vihaan to eat chilies once because he lied during a game...Raghav didn't interrupt. He just listened.Really listened. His eyes stayed on her face the entire time-like memorizing every expression she made.Every smile.Every laugh. And somewhere in the middle of her stories...his hand slowly slid over hers. Not fast. Not intentional.Just... natural. Her fingers froze for a second-then relaxed, intertwining with his once again. She didn't even notice when it happened. She was too busy laughing. But he noticed. He felt everything. And for the first time, he wasn't afraid of how much he cared.
Vanshika's laughter gradually softened into a gentle smile. Her eyes grew heavy, the warmth from Raghav's jacket and the closeness of his presence lulling her into calm. She yawned quietly, and he noticed immediately.
"Looks like someone is finally giving up the fight," he teased softly, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face.
"I... I guess I am," she murmured, voice drowsy, eyes half-closed.Raghav shifted slightly, careful not to disturb her, and murmured,
"Then let me make sure you rest properly."He gently lifted her, supporting her as she leaned against him, her head finding its place against his shoulder once again. Her small hands clutched his shirt as if anchoring herself, and he held her close, feeling the steady rise and fall of her breath.
"Sleep," he whispered, his lips brushing the top of her head.
"I've got you. Nothing's going to hurt you while I'm here."
Vanshika's eyelids fluttered, and a soft, contented sigh escaped her lips. For the first time in days, she felt completely safe. The tension, the fear, the hunt for that guy who had shaken her world-they all seemed distant now.Her breathing evened out, and the faint smile lingered on her lips even as sleep took over.Raghav watched her, heart tightening in a way he didn't expect-like he wanted to protect her forever, right here, right now.He shifted slightly, careful not to wake her, and draped his arm gently around her, his hand resting lightly on her back. The cool night breeze brushed their faces, but the warmth between them was undeniable.
"I'll stay with you my whole life," he whispered softly, just for her.And in the quiet of the night, Vanshika slept peacefully, completely at ease, leaning against him.Raghav stayed still, his heart slowly returning to normal, listening to her even breaths, knowing-without words-that he would never let anything hurt her again. The night wrapped them in its gentle embrace, and for a few precious hours, everything else-the past week's stress, the fear, the unknown-faded away completely.
Raghav gently disentangled himself from Vanshika, careful not to disturb her sleep. He moved slowly, almost reluctantly, toward the door.As he paused to open it, his eyes fell on her once more-curled under the blanket, hair falling softly across her face, chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm. For a moment, he just stood there, drinking in the sight, a small, almost imperceptible smile tugging at his lips. Then, with a soft sigh, he quietly closed the door behind him and stepped out.The soft click echoed through the room, but she didn't stir.He let himself breathe for the first time since entering-relief, protectiveness, and something deeper all mingling in his chest. The corridor was quiet as he walked down the hall, the distant laughter and voices of their friends growing louder with each step.
When he reached the lounge area, he saw Ishana, Abhiman, Navya, and Vihaan bickering over some trivial game rules, their voices overlapping, teasing, and playful.Raghav shook his head, a small grin spreading across his face.
"Still at it, huh?" he muttered under his breath, quietly slipping into the fray.Vihaan noticed him first and smirked.
"Finally! You're back! We've been waiting for someone to settle this argument!"
Abhiman threw his hands up dramatically."Settle it? You just want to take Vanshika's side again!"
Raghav laughed softly, glancing back toward her room without admitting it aloud."Nope. Not taking sides," he said, his tone calm but teasing, "Just making sure everyone behaves before she wakes up."
Ishana rolled her eyes but smiled."Good luck with that. These boys are impossible."
Raghav's gaze softened as he watched them-his friends, his chosen family-and for a moment, he allowed himself to relax, knowing Vanshika was safe, sleeping peacefully, and that he was right where he needed to be.
"Areey I have an idea!" Navya suddenly said, sitting up straight, her eyes lighting up.
"Kya?" Ishana asked, instantly curious.Navya leaned forward slightly.
"Vanshi kaafi dino se stress mein hai... so let's do something na. Kuch aisa karte hain jisse usse accha lage."For a second, everyone went quiet. Then Abhiman raised an eyebrow and smirked,
"Pehli baar apni zindagi mein kuch sahi baat ki hai tune."
"Chup re!" Navya snapped, throwing a cushion at him.Vihaan caught it mid-air and chuckled.
"Idea toh accha hai... lekin kare kya?"
"Good question..." Navya muttered, tapping her chin dramatically as she started thinking.
Ishana leaned back, sighing softly."Honestly, usse distraction chahiye... like proper wala. Something fun... jisme woh overthink hi na kare."
"Shopping?" Vihaan suggested immediately.
"Tumhe bas paise udaane ka reason chahiye hota hai," Navya shot back.
"Arre New York aaye hain, shopping toh banti hai!" he defended.Abhiman shook his head.
"Shopping se zyada... usse kuch lively chahiye. Something jahan woh khud ko feel kare... not just roam around."
Raghav, who had been quiet till now, finally spoke, his tone thoughtful.
"Usse control pasand hai... jab cheezein uske according hoti hain tab woh comfortable feel karti hai."
Everyone looked at him.He continued, "So maybe... we plan something for her. Surprise type. Jahan woh bas enjoy kare... bina soche."
Ishana's eyes lit up."YES! Surprise! That's perfect."
Navya snapped her fingers."Exactly! Surprise plan karte hain... poora din uske liye."
Vihaan grinned."Full-on New York style treatment."
Abhiman smirked."Bas ek baat yaad rakhna... agar surprise flop hua na, toh Vanshika hum sabko zinda nahi chhodega."
Everyone burst out laughing.Raghav smiled faintly, but his eyes softened.
"Flop nahi hoga," he said quietly."Main hoon na."
Ishana noticed the tone... but didn't say anything. She just smiled knowingly."Okay then,"
Navya clapped her hands softly,"Plan banate hain. Kal ka din-only for Vanshi."And just like that, their late-night chaos turned into a mission-to bring back Vanshika's smile.
"Ek second... ek second!" Ishana suddenly said, raising her hand.Everyone paused and looked at her.
"Kya hua?" Vihaan asked.Ishana frowned slightly.
"Hum plan toh kar rahe hain... but kya teachers hume akele jaane denge?"For a moment, silence.
"Ha yaar..." Navya muttered, her excitement dropping a little. "Ye bhi ek problem hai."
Abhiman leaned back casually, completely unbothered."Huh! Chill... apna hi raaj hai. Bol denge bahar ja rahe hain, ho jaayega manage."
Raghav shot him a look but didn't say anything.Ishana narrowed her eyes at Abhiman for a second... then sighed.
"Actually... chill yaar. We'll figure something out. Plan toh karte hain pehle."
"Exactly!" Navya clapped lightly. "Focus on the main mission-Vanshi ko khush karna."
"Finally kuch sensible bola," Vihaan muttered.
"Tu chup reh," Navya shot back instantly.
Abhiman smirked. "Dono band karo... warna surprise se pehle hi ladai start ho jaayegi."
Raghav shook his head with a faint smile. "Focus, guys."
And just like that, they got back into planning.Ideas were thrown around-some crazy, some actually useful.Arguments broke out, teasing didn't stop, and laughter filled the room.
"Arey nahi yaar, itna bhi extra mat bana!"
"Extra nahi hai, memorable hai!"
"Memorable ya embarrassing?"
"Difference tum samjhoge nahi!"
After what felt like hours of chaos, debate, and last-minute changes...
"Done!" Navya finally said, dropping back on the couch dramatically."Best plan ever."
"Let's just hope Vanshika agrees to come," Ishana muttered.
"She will," Raghav said calmly, his tone sure.Everyone glanced at him for a second... then smiled.
"Alright," Abhiman stretched, "ab so jao sab. Kal bada din hai."
"Finally," Vihaan groaned. One by one, they got up, picking their phones and keys.
"Good night, idiots," Navya said.
"Same to you," Abhiman replied.
Ishana smiled softly, "Kal milte hain... and remember-no one ruins this."
"Obviously," Vihaan said.Raghav gave a small nod, already thinking ahead. And with that, they all headed toward their respective rooms-a plan set in motion,a surprise waiting for morning, and a hope... to bring back Vanshika's smile.
Raghav, Abhiman, and Vihaan entered their room. The moment they stepped in, Vihaan and Abhiman practically threw themselves onto the bed.
"Bhai... jet lag ho raha hai," Vihaan groaned, spreading his arms dramatically.Abhiman turned his head lazily and smirked,
"Tujhe jet lag nahi... jet lag ko jet lag ho raha hoga."Vihaan glared at him.
"Bada funny hai tu."
Raghav just shook his head, a faint smile on his lips as he picked up a water bottle and started drinking.Suddenly-
"Waise... Vanshi ko kab propose karne wala hai?" Vihaan said casually.
Raghav choked on water.
Abhiman choked on air.
Both of them stared at Vihaan.Vihaan slowly turned onto one elbow, a full smirk on his face.
"Problem kya hai? Simple question poocha hai maine."
Raghav coughed slightly, wiping his mouth."K-kya bakwaas kar raha hai tu?"
"Chal be," Vihaan said, narrowing his eyes playfully,"seedha seedha bol-kab kar raha hai propose?"
Before Raghav could respond, Abhiman jumped in, clearly enjoying this."Propose toh tab karega na jab isko realise hoga ki ye usse pyaar karta hai," he said lazily.Raghav shot him a sharp look.
"Abey-"But Abhiman wasn't done."Banda full-on pyaar karta hai usse... phir bhi bolta hai-'I don't know yaar... mujhe nahi pata main pyaar karta hoon ya sirf attraction hai...'Blah blah blah..."
Vihaan burst out laughing."Maar khaayega saale!"
Raghav snapped, grabbing a pillow and throwing it straight at Abhiman.Abhiman caught it easily, still grinning.
"Sach bolne pe gussa aa raha hai?"Raghav ran a hand through his hair, clearly annoyed... but also flustered.
"Tum dono ka na kuch nahi ho sakta."
Vihaan sat up slightly, his tone softening just a bit."Jokes apart... tujhe samajhna padega, Raghav. Jo tu feel karta hai na... woh normal nahi hai."
The room went a little quiet.Abhiman added, this time more seriously,"Tu uske liye overthink karta hai... uske liye fight karega... uske liye rukta hai...Ye attraction nahi hota, bhai."
Raghav didn't reply immediately. He just looked away... jaw slightly tight.Images flashed in his mind-Vanshika smiling...Vanshika laughing...Vanshika holding him like he was her safe place...He exhaled slowly.
"Bas..." he muttered, lying down on the bed, staring at the ceiling,"abhi kuch mat bolo."
Vihaan and Abhiman exchanged a glance. Then Vihaan smirked again, breaking the seriousness,"Thik hai... jab realise ho jaaye tab batana. Hum band bajaane ke liye ready rahenge."
Abhiman chuckled."Bilkul. Full celebration hoga."Raghav threw another pillow at them.
"Chup kar ke so jao dono."But this time...there was a small, unspoken smile on his lips.
After all the chaos, teasing, and laughter...the room finally fell silent.Vihaan was sprawled across the bed, snoring lightly.Abhiman had his arm thrown over his eyes, already deep asleep. But Raghav...Raghav was wide awake. He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, one arm folded behind his head. The faint city lights filtered through the curtains, casting soft shadows across the room. His mind wasn't quiet. It was filled with her.Vanshika...her laughter from earlier...the way she had clutched his shirt when she hugged him...the way her voice had trembled when she said
"Can I hug you?"His chest tightened. He closed his eyes... but that only made it worse. Her face appeared clearer. The way she looked at him-like she trusted him more than anyone else. The way she had relaxed in his arms...like she belonged there.Raghav exhaled slowly, dragging a hand down his face.
"What is this..." he whispered to himself.Attraction?No.It didn't feel that simple.Attraction didn't make your heart race when someone was scared. It didn't make you want to protect someone from things you couldn't even see.It didn't make you lose sleep just thinking about whether they were okay. His fingers clenched slightly against the bedsheet. He remembered her words-"Tum mera peecha kabhi nahi chhodge na?"
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
"Never..." he murmured again, almost instinctively. He turned to his side, staring at nothing in particular. Why did it matter so much? Why did she matter so much?He didn't have the answer. But one thing was clear-When she was in his arms...everything felt right.Too right. And that scared him just as much as it pulled him in.Raghav closed his eyes again, this time letting the thought stay instead of pushing it away.
"Shayad..." he whispered under his breath,"shayad main bhaag raha hoon."He didn't complete the sentence.Didn't need to.Because deep down...he already knew what he was running from.Or rather-what he was falling into.
His eyes slowly drifted shut, but his mind didn't resist this time. For the first time, he didn't push the feeling away.He let it stay.Let it grow.Because somewhere deep down, beneath all the confusion and denial...he already knew the truth. And maybe... just maybe-he was ready to face it.
